Substitute Teaching Requirements

Colorado Issues three types of substitute authorizations: 1-year authorization, 3-year authorization, and 5-year authorization. A substitute authorization allows you to work in a Colorado public school as a substitute teacher. The substitute authorizations are issued without grade level or subject endorsement area.

One-Year Substitute Teaching Certification

Note that a one-year substitute authorization is valid for 12 months from the date your application is approved. You will need the following items ready before you begin your eLicensure application on the Colorado Department of Education website.

  1. Submit your fingerprints to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
  2. Confirm you have a valid form of government-issued identification.
  3. Document employment history for the past 5 years. Include employer/business name, dates of employment, reason for leaving, work addresses, supervisor names, and contact information. Also, include teaching experience from more than five years ago, if you have it.
  4. Complete the application section of the One Year Substitute Verification Form. Forward the form to your employer’s human resources department to complete and sign the remaining section. The employer must return the completed and signed form to you so you can include it with your online application. If you intend to substitute for more than one employer, you will need to complete a separate from for each district, BOCES, charter school, or private school/facility.
  5. If applicable, please have your past criminal history, disciplinary actions, and any issues related to licensure or employment.

Three-Year Substitute Teaching Certification

For a three-year substitute teaching certification you will need the following items ready before you begin your eLicensure application on the Colorado Department of Education website.

  1. Submit your fingerprints to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
  2. Confirm you have a valid form of government-issued identification.
  3. Document employment history for the past 5 years. Include employer/business name, dates of employment, reason for leaving, work addresses, supervisor names, and contact information. Also, include teaching experience from more than five years ago, if you have it.
  4. If applicable, please have your past criminal history, disciplinary actions, and any issues related to licensure or employment.

Five-Year Substitute Teaching Certification

For a five-year substitute teaching certification you will need the following items ready before you begin your eLicensure application on the Colorado Department of Education website.

  1. Submit your fingerprints to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
  2. Confirm you have a valid form of government-issued identification.
  3. Out-of-state applicants must hold an unexpired (non-Colorado) teaching license.
  4. Document employment history for the past 5 years. Include employer/business name, dates of employment, reason for leaving, work addresses, supervisor names, and contact information. Also, include teaching experience from more than five years ago, if you have it.
  5. In-state applicants must hold or have held a Colorado teaching license.
  6. If applicable, please have your past criminal history, disciplinary actions, and any issues related to licensure or employment.
